Creating an Irresistible Organisational Experience that Retains Valuable Employees and Talent

A recent article by Gallup titled "Warning: Even Your Committed Employees Are Being Recruited," highlights how competition for talent is reaching unprecedented levels, and that the rules of recruiting are changing.

It cited that remote working has led to the growth of talent pools for organisations, recruitment changes and employees' expectations. As such, there is more poaching going on than most leaders realise. In search of talent to fill critical roles, recruiters are targeting even engaged employees of organisations. As a result, no employees are really "off the market" now.

The questions to ponder over is "How can organisations ensure that they attract and retain their talent during these unprecedented times?"

Employers need to place a greater importance on attracting and retaining current employees and must not forget why people joined the organisation in the first place.

According to Deloitte’s Simply Irresistible Organisation Model, the following  6 core drivers are essential for creating a great organisational experience is paramount for retaining valued employees and talent and truly wow them to stay for more.

  1. Meaningful work
  2. Supportive management
  3. Positive work environment
  4. Growth opportunities
  5. Trust in leadership
  6. Cross-organisational collaboration and communication

Meaningful Work

Meaningful work is a key to positive organisational experience.  The four key factors that  determine employers’ ability to make an employee's job more meaningful are: employees have autonomy over how tasks are done; employees are selected to fit; employees are organised into empowered teams, and employees have time for slack. All these four factors are to exist coherently. Employees are more likely to thrive and grow when they experience their job as meaningful. As a result, it increases employee performance and motivation to stay on.

Supportive Management

To provide a positive organisational (employee) experience, employers play a bigger role than one might guess. Research indicates that when supportive management defines goals for employees, develops and invests in their development, and provides the performance feedback it leads to a supportive organisational experience that engages and retains the people.

Positive Work Environment

Research from Deloitte shows 94% of executives and 88% of employees think a positive organisational culture is an essential part of an organisation’s success.

The following factors determine an organisation's ability to create a positive work environment for its employees: employers promote a flexible work environment with an open workspace; have a humanistic workplace that promotes employee wellness; have a culture of recognition where employees show appreciation, and promote an accepting environment where employees can be themselves. Therefore, creating a positive work environment should be an integral part of any organisation's strategy.

Growth Opportunities

Employees will experience growth opportunities when their employers place them on effective career growth and development paths, provide them with training on the job and facilitate talent mobility, self-directed dynamic learning, and foster a culture of curiosity for employees to discover, explore and learn.

Trust In Leadership

Fostering trust is one of the most important responsibilities of a leader in an organisation.  Deloitte’s Simply Irresistible Organisation Model advocates that as long as the leadership of an organisation clearly defines mission and purpose, demonstrates honor, and supports the employees' personal goals with the organisation's vision, the employees would trust its leadership.

Cross-Organisational Collaboration and Communication

Cross-organisation collaboration and communication are most effective when organisations foster open communication, value diversity, champion an inclusive environment, and when shared goals are present.

What might your employees and talent say if you were to ask them “How is your experience with our organisation so far?”  How well is your organisation keeping the employee turnover low? Is your organisation losing its talent to competitors? Guess no more!
