Staying on top by improving creativity and innovation

Headquartered in Singapore, NatSteel Holdings Pte Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, one of the world’s top ten largest steel producers. Tata Steel acquired the steel business of NatSteel Ltd in 2005. NatSteel played an important part in building Singapore in its early years as the only steel mill in Singapore with integrated melting-rolling-fabricating facilities. Today, the company also serves the construction industry in Asia with steel production capacity of more than 2 million tonnes per year. It is one of the top steel providers in Asia-Pacific with over 3,500 employees in Singapore, Australia, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. NatSteel is also the Asia-Pacific hub for supporting regional operations in production, engineering development, logistics, procurement, and environment and safety programmes. Its extensive range of steel products is used for commercial buildings and residential housing as well as infrastructure works such as tunnels, bridges and the Mass Rapid Transit system. Its downstream facility also boasts one of the largest single cut-and-bend operations in the region. The company also emphasizes corporate social responsibility with million-dollar investments in community outreach, and environmental protection and conservation initiatives. NatSteel has achieved many national accolades in recognition of its commitment to human capital development, such as People Developer Standard, Work-Life Excellence Award, Singapore Health Award, and Singapore Family Friendly Employer Award.

Challenge
Although garnering 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze Awards at the National Innovative Quality Circle Convention in 2004, NatSteel realized that there was a persistent need to strengthen the innovation culture in the company in order to sustain NatSteel’s competitive advantage. NatSteel sought out PACE to equip their employees with creative thinking and problem-solving skills so as to empower their employees to continuously uphold the creativity and innovation culture in the organization.
Solution
PACE consultants designed, developed and delivered a series of creative thinking and problem-solving workshops for NatSteel’s employees. PACE consultants also complemented the workshop training with a coaching component for the employees in line with PACE’s OD approach. This ensured high return-on-investment by NatSteel on the investment for the training. PACE consultants coached the employees to effectively transfer their newly acquired skills to their workplace.
Results

· NatSteel achieved significant improvement in innovation and quality by garnering 4 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze Awards at the National Innovative Quality Circle Convention in 2005.
